The corps device for the United States Maritime Ser-vice [USMS], a fouled anchor inside a wreath of laurel, is worn as both a collar device and a Garrison Cap device. On shirt collars, a pin-on metal collar grade insignia is worn on the wearer’s left collar and the corps device is worn on the right. Similarly, pin-on metal grade insignia is worn on the wearer’s right of the Garrison Cap and the corps device is worn on the right.

Despite the Maritime Service and Merchant Marine’s rich history and significant contributions to victory during World War II—Franklin Delano Roosevelt said that its personnel “have written one of [the war’s] most brilliant chapters”—they seem to have been forgotten once the armistice was signed. In 1954, many USMS schools and academies across the country were shuttered, leaving the service to oversee the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy and a handful of national and state naval academies.
