Our Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Combination Cap, or Combination Hat, is made in the USA and meets or surpasses all pertinent USCG uniform specifications and regulations. The unquestionable focal point of the CPO’s Combination Cap is the silver-and-gold fouled anchor with attached shield. The anchor has long been a Naval emblem, but it is particularly associated with CPOs, while the 13 stars and 13 stripes on the silver shield are nod to our nation’s founding colonies and subsequently states.

Created in 1915 through a merger of the U.S. Revenue Cutter Service and the U.S. Life Saving Services, the Coast Guard did not officially have the grade of Chief Petty Officer until Congress passed legislation in May 1920 that made the Coast Guard’s ratings and grades of enlisted personnel—Warrant Officers, Chief Petty Officers, Petty Officers, and Guardsmen below that rate—the same as the Navy’s. In a fitting turn of events, the Coast Guard’s first CPOs were those personnel who had served as Station Keepers at Life Saving Stations; they were redesignated Chief Boatswain’s Mates and given an “L” extension on their title to indicate they did not serve aboard seagoing vessels.

The regulations issued by the Coast Guard on May 18, 1920 regarding the newly established grade divided CPOs into three branches: Seaman, Artificer, and Special. Another two years would elapse before those regulations provided guidelines for the uniform design to be used for the nascent grade.
