U.S. ARMY SOLDIERS MEDIA CENTER PATCH (SSI)

The Soldiers Media Center Shoulder Sleeve Insignia, or unit patch, was approved on 30 June 2005. Its background is teal blue, the color long used by units unassigned to a basic branch. On the left and right sides, lightning flashes denote power and speed of communications. A trio of crossed arrows in the center of the insignia signifies unit readiness, and in combination with the lightning flashes illustrates the electronic signals used for modern-day data transmissions.

Activated on 9 November 2006, the Soldiers Media Center assumed the mission of the Army Broadcast Service by consolidating the producers of the official U.S Army Web site, Soldiers magazine, Army News Service, Soldiers Radio and Television, Hometown News Service, and the Army’s Armed Forces Radio and Television Services. The consolidation enables the Center to cross-promote products and information, leveraging the reach of a TV or radio broadcast by linking it to a more information-rich sources such as a magazine article or to a Web site that has hyperlinks leading to even more in-depth reporting.

The Army Broadcast Service, established in 1980, was deactivated on the same day that Soldiers Media Center launched in 2006.
