U.S. ARMY ASYMMETRIC WARFARE GROUP COMBAT SERVICE ID BADGE (CSIB)

The creation of the United States Army’s Asymmetric Warfare Group (AWG) was in large part due to the unconventional warfare tactics and techniques encountered by U.S. and Coalition forces during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Along with the Improvised Explosive Device (IED) Task Force (later transformed into the Joint IED Defeat Organization) and the Rapid Quipping Force, the AWG was established to enable rapid responses to new combat requirements.

First established as a Field Operating Agency in 2004 and provided direct support for combat operations, but was officially activated the Secretary of the Army in January 2006. Nearly six years later, it was assigned to the Army’s Training and Doctrine Command, and in January 2014 it opened an Asymmetric Warfare Training Center at Fort Walker in Virginia (previously designated as Fort A. P. Hill).

The AWG was awarded the Army Superior Unit citation in 2015 for the contributions in developing tactics and strategies specifically crafted to reflect the battlespace challenges that emerged during Operation Iraqi Freedom, Operation Enduring Freedom, and Operation New Dawn.

The Asymmetric Warfare Group Combat Service ID Badge (CSIB) is identical to the unit’s Shoulder Sleeve Insignia which was approved in October 2006. It features a red arrow, pointing to the wearer’s left, on a circular black field. The black field symbolizes the unknown threats that characterize asymmetric warfare, while the arrow has multiple connotations, including the asymmetric combat styles used by Native Americans during the Indian Wars in the U.S. during the mid- to late-19th century.
