With a complete designation of 528th Sustainment Brigade
, Special Operations (Airborne) and known as “Sentinels” the 528th Sustainment Brigade provides logistics, signal operations and support, and medical care to U.S. Army Special Operations Forces and joint elements in order to enhance the Global Special Operations Forces Network. Since the terror attacks of September 11, roughly a third of the Brigade’s 800 highly trained Soldiers are deployed at any given time in small teams across the globe.
In addition to its Headquarters and Headquarters Company, the Brigade comprises the 528th Special Troops Battalion and the 112th Signal Battalion. In addition to these two units, the Brigade has a permanent team in place in each theater where Special Operations forces are active, with Army Special Operations Forces Liaison Elements (ALEs) based at every Theater Special Operations Command and Army Service Component Command Headquarters. It also has a Signal Support Detachment stationed at each of the Theater Special Operations Commands.
From 1987 until 2005, the unit was known as the 528th Support Battalion. Following inactivation in October 2005, it was redesignated under its current title and role in October 2008 and was activated 16 December 2008 at Fort Bragg (now Fort Liberty) in North Carolina. Its lineage goes back to the constitution of the 528th Quartermaster Service Battalion on 4 December 1942, which was subsequently activated on 15 December 1942 at Camp McCain, Mississippi.
