U.S. ARMY 35TH SIGNAL BRIGADE (NO TAB)

The imagery of the 35th Signal Brigade unit patch—a lion with lightning flashes issuing from its nostrils and behind the top of its head—is used on its Combat Service ID Badge and inspired the unit’s nickname of “The Lion Brigade. In heraldry, lions symbolize fierceness and courage; it is rendered in blue as tribute to the unit’s former status as an Airborne unit (the insignia was amended in 2006 to remove the “Airborne” tab). Orange and white are the colors associated with the Signal Corps, and the lightning flashes represent the speed of modern communications.

The unit was originally constituted as the 931st Signal Battalion on 11 January 1943 and was activated four days later at Esler Field in Lousiana. In December of that year it was reorganized and redesignated the 931st Signal Battalion, Separate, Tactical Air Force, and on 12 June 1944 it was returned to its original designation of 931st Signal Battalion. Before its inactivation, it was awarded a Meritorious Unit Citation by Army Air Forces, India Burma Theater on 14 September 1945. It also received official credit for participation in the Central Burma, India Burman, and China Offensive campaigns in the Pacific Theater of Operations.
