U.S. ARMY 82ND SUPPORT BATTALION BERET FLASH AND/OR OVAL

The 82nd Support Battalion organizational flash and oval were both approved on 7 June 1993, a little over ten months before it was activated on 16 April 1994 at Fort Bragg, North Carolina, ending a nearly 30-year period of being inactivated. Like the flash and oval of its parent organization, the 82nd Airborne, the 82nd Support Battalion’s flash and oval features a red-white-blue color scheme, but with the white employed as a diagonal band.

The flash is worn centered on the stiffener of the marron beret authorized for Airborne units, with Officers mounting their non-subdued rank insignia on it; NCOs and Junior Enlisted place the Distinctive Unit Insignia upon it.

Technically referred to as background trimming, the oval serves as the backing for the Parachutist or Air Assault badges. Considered a single item when worn together, the oval-and-badge combination is worn on Service Dress coats (AGSU and ASU), Service Dress shirts, and for female Soldiers the blue or green Maternity Tunic.

Currently assigned to the 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division and designated at the 82nd Brigade Support Battalion, the 82nd Support Battalion was originally constituted on 11 April 1968 with that designation; it has been assigned to the 82nd Airborne Division ever since. After activation in May 1968, the Battalion saw action in a half-dozen campaigns before being in activated on 15 December 1969, earning a Meritorious Unit Commendation (MUC) and a Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm (it’s A Company was tapped for an additional MUC).

While its campaign credits for the numerous deployments in support of the War on Terrorism are yet to be determined, its outstanding service has not gone unrecognized. In 2008, it was named a Valorous Unit Award recipient for its support of the 3rd Brigade Combat Team between August 2003 and March, and it also has been tapped for three Meritorious Unit Commendations for action between 9 August 2006 and November 2009. Additionally, two companies, B and E, were selected for additional awards, a Presidential Unit Citation and a Valorous Unit Award respectively.
