The organizational flash and oval worn by personnel serving the 82nd Signal Battalion are rendered in orange and white, branch colors of the Signal corps, but the symbolism of the pentagon in the center (aside from the obvious potential reference to the Department of Defense headquarters) is unknown (you can email us at spoole@thesaluteuniforms.com if you have information about this insignia design).
Interestingly, the original version of the oval (officially called background trimming) had a solid orange interior with no pentagon, and there were some 82nd Signal Battalion flashes manufactured in error that positioned the pentagon flipped vertically from the correct orientation seen here.
For the most recent guidance on the wear of the organizational flashes and background trimming, please refer to
paragraph 21–32 of the January 2021 edition of
DA PAM 670-1,
Guide to the Wear and Appearance of Army Uniforms and Insignia.
