Approved on 11 August 1994, the 82nd Personnel Services Battalion flash was worn on the maroon beret authorized for personnel in Airborne units—but not for very long.
Originally constituted on 1 October 1987 as the 82nd Personnel Service Company, the 82nd Personnel Services Battalion was formed through that Company’s reorganization and redesignation on 16 January 1995. On 21 January 1997, the Battalion was disbanded when it was consolidated with the 82nd Finance Battalion and the merged unit was designated as the 82nd Soldier Support Battalion. As it turns out, this newly formed unit would also have a relatively short service life: it would be inactivated in 2007 as part of the Army’s Personnel Services Delivery Redesign.
The 82nd Personnel Services Battalion oval, or background trimming was also approved 11 August 1994. Unlike the flash, which was worn by all members of the organization, wear of the oval was/is limited to personnel authorized to wear any of the three degrees of Parachutist badge or the Air Assault badge. The oval is worn beneath the badge, with the primary portion of the badge centered on the oval; the two components are counted as one item for measuring or placement purposes.
Ovals are worn behind the two badges on Service Coats or Shirts (AGSU and Army Service/Dress Uniform) and the blue or green Army Maternity Tunic.
