Company D, 82nd Aviation Regiment was originally constituted in the Regular Army as Company D, Aviation Battalion, an element of the 82nd Airborne Division, on 16 September 1979. On 15 January 1987, it was redesignated as Company D, 82nd Aviation, an element of the 82nd Airborne Division, and in 2005 the 82nd Aviation was redesignated as the 82nd Aviation Regiment.
15 January 2006 marked the 19th anniversary of Company D being designated as an organic element of the 82nd Aviation Regiment—and it also was the day that the Company was inactivated and simultaneously was reflagged as HQ and HQ Company, 122nd Aviation Support Battalion.
Flashes are worn centered on the stiffener of berets, which are divided into two categories: the black beret, which is an issue item, and organizational berets whose color represents the type of unit in which the wearer serves. Organizational berets come in green, maroon, tan, and brown and respectively are worn by Special Forces, Airborne, Ranger, and Security Force Assistance Command Soldiers. Officers wear non-subdued insignia or rank centered on the flash, while NCOs and Soldiers wear their Distinctive Unit Insignia or Regimental Distinctive Insignias there.
