U.S. ARMY 75TH RANGER REGIMENT, 4TH BATTALION BERET FLASH

According to U.S. Army Patches, Flashes and Ovals, the most extensive resource readily available for historical information on beret flashes and ovals aside from The Institute of Herealdry, the beret flash (officially designated as an "organizational flash") for the 4th Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment (AKA 4th Ranger Battalion) was the result of a manufacturing error and was not approved for wear.

The 4th Ranger Battalion was activated on 29 May 1943, due largely to the somewhat surprising success enjoyed by the first Ranger unit ever established, the 1st Battalion, during the last days of 1942 and the first quarter of 1943. Buoyed by the 1st Battalion’s string of victories, the 4th Battalion was created and then, less than a month later, the 3rd Battalion.

Unfortunately, all three Ranger Battalions were almost completely wiped out in an ill-fated attack on the Italian town of Cisterna. Launched during the night of 31 January 1944, the Ranger’s expected little resistance since Allied intelligence indicated that the main German forces lay behind the town, when actually the village was an assembly area for arriving German reinforcements.

Facing off against elements of the German’s 716th Infantry Division and the Herman Goering Panzer Division—equipped with nearly twenty tanks—the grossly outnumbered Rangers suffered heavy casualties during the seven-hour battle that ended with the Rangers’ surrender. Of the 760-plus Rangers who had begun the mission, a mere seven managed to make it back to Allied lines.

After being disbanded at Camp Butner, North Carolina on 24 October 1944, the 4th Ranger Battalion’s component units underwent organizational changes. Company A was reconstituted in the Regular Army as the 4th Ranger Infantry Company on 25 October 1950, activated three days later, then inactivated on 1 August 1951 in Korea. Similarly, Company B was reconstituted in the Regular Army as the 8th Ranger Infantry Company on 2 November 1950, activated less than three weeks later on 20 November 1950, then inactivated on the same day (1 August 1951) and in the same location (Korea) as Company A.

But the Battalion was reconstituted on 24 November 1952 in the Regular Army as the 4th Ranger Infantry Battalion, and on 3 February 1956 it was consolidated with the former 1st Ranger Infantry Battalion, the 2nd Infantry Battalion, and the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th Ranger Infantry Battalions. The newly consolidated unit was designated as the 75th Ranger Regiment and was concurrently withdrawn from the Combat Arms Regimental System and reorganized under the United States Army Regimental System.
