U.S. ARMY 650TH MILITARY INTELLIGENCE GROUP UNIT CREST (DUI)

The sea lions facing left and right in the center of the 650th Military Intelligence Group Distinctive Unit Insignia, or unit crest, are a reference to the New Guinea and Luzon campaigns the unit took part in during World War II. A Philippine sunburst, just above the unit motto of “Security Truth Alliance," celebrates the unit being chosen to receive a Philippine Presidential Unit Citation for its role in the liberation of the nation at the end of the war.

An octagon on which the sea lions are superimposed alludes to the number eight, the number for perfect intelligence in the Military Intelligence community. Black white sections stand for day-and-night, round-the-clock vigilance, while gold—color of the sun, which sees all—stands for intuition revealing truth just as the sun appears to bring light out of inscrutable darkness. The oriental blue used in the escutcheon is one of the Military Intelligence Corps branch colors along with silver gray.

Army Regulation 381–45, published 19 May April 2023 with an effective date of 19 May 2023, tasks the 650th Military Intelligence Group with archiving records pertaining to CounterIntelligence investigations of U.S. persons conducted by INSCOM, U.S. Army CounterIntelligence Command, and the 650th Military Intelligence Group.

Often called a unit crest or referred to by the initialism DUI, the Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam (DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however).

For Enlisted personnel, the insignia is centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the insignia by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1
, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap" respectively
