U.S. ARMY 62ND SIGNAL BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 62nd Signal Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia—DUI for short, and also called a unit crest— was originally approved on 3 July 1941. It was rescinded/cancelled on 13 August 1976 while the unit was designated as the 62nd Maintenance Battalion (its DUI was based upon this design, however), but was reapproved at some point after the unit was redesignated as the 62nd Signal Battalion in 1998. The orange and white (silver) of the shield are the Signal Corps branch colors. The star represents the state of Texas, where the Battalion was originally organized, while the winged foot of Hermes/Mercury alludes to the message services provided by the organization.

Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Except for a brief stint (1966 to 1972) as the 62nd Maintenance Battalion, the 62nd Signal Battalion has served under more or less the same designation since it was constituted on 1 October 1933. The “Messenger” Battalion, whose motto is “Forewarned Is Forearmed,” served in four World War II campaigns in the European-African-Middle Eastern Theater and was awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation for its service while assigned to IV Corps. It was during the Vietnam War that it was converted to a Maintenance Battalion; it took part in fourteen of the seventeen named campaigns in that war and earned a Meritorious Unit Commendation (its Headquarters and Main Support Company were cited in the General Order announcing the honor).

The Battalion was inactivated upon return from Vietnam in October 1972, and it was still inactive when it was converted and redesignated back to the 62nd Signal Battalion in 1998. The unit was finally reactivated in October 2009 after close to forty years on inactive status, and has also been expanded to become the 62nd Signal Battalion (Expeditionary), alternatively titled 62nd Expeditionary Signal Battalion. The Battalion’s service in Iraq in from April to December of 2011 was recognized with another Meritorious Unit Commendation, this one issued in January 2012.
