U.S. ARMY 6TH SIGNAL COMMAND UNIT CREST (DUI)

Originally constituted and activated in 1974, the 6th Signal Command was inactivated after just three years on 30 November 1977. Thirteen years later, the “Voice Of The Desert” was activated on 4 December 1990 in support of Operation Desert Shield and in anticipation of the soon-to-be-launched Operation Desert Storm. The Command took part in all three campaigns of the Southwest Asia conflict and was awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation in December 1992, six months after its eventual inactivation on 1 June 1992.

The falcon prominently displayed on the circular orange field of the Distinctive Unit Insignia of the 6th Signal Command is an animal associated with Saudi Arabia and the Middle East because inhabitants of the region respect it as a hunting bird and powerful inhabitant of the desert. A lightning flash on the falcon reflects the speed at which 6th Signal Command carries out its communications mission, and crossed scimitars at the base are a symbol of desert service. The blue used in the border connotes loyalty and commitment to duty.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
