Originally constituted as the 55th Signal Repair Company in the Army of the United States on 26 November 1943, the 55th Signal Company is now designated as a Combat Camera unit, tasked with providing still and video documentation of Army operations during both peacetime and in combat. It is the only active Combat Camera unit currently in the Army, and it also has the distinction of being an Airborne unit.
In addition to battle honors (campaign credits) its predecessor units earned in World War II (one) and the Korean War (three), the Company has been tapped for two Meritorious Unit Commendations for service in the War on Terrorism to go along with its Republic of Korea Presidential Unit Citation (1950-1951).
Both the flash and oval for 55th Signal Company features a light-blue, gridlined demi-globe on a field of orange; the globe denotes the worldwide scope of the Company’s mission, and the orange is for the unit’s status as a Signal organization (orange is the primary branch color). Both the flash and oval were approved on 27 May 1994.
