U.S. ARMY 426TH CIVIL AFFAIRS BATTALION BERET FLASH AND/OR OVAL

The beret flash and Airborne background trimming, the latter more commonly known simply as an “oval,” were both approved for wear by personnel of the 426th Civil Affairs Battalion on 3 February 2007.

Also known as an organizational flash because it represents a single organization or unit, the flash is centered on the maroon beret authorized for wear by members of Airborne-designated units, regardless of the Airborne or Airborne-related qualifications of an individual member. Enlisted Soldiers wear the Battalion’s Distinctive Unit Insignia centered on the flash, while Officers wear the rank insignia in similar fashion.

Ovals are authorized for Battalion members who have earned an Air Assault or Parachutist badge, which are centered on the embroidered insignia before the combination is placed on the Service uniform coats (AGSU and ASU), shirts (Class B ASU), and Army Maternity Tunics (female Soldiers only). Instructions for the correct positioning of the oval-badge combination, which is considered a single item when worn together, can be found in subsection (b) of Chapter 22-16 of the January 2021 DA PAM 670-1. Guidance on the wear of both insignias is also found in Chapter 21-32, subsections (a) and (b).

An Army Reserve unit, the Battalion has been ordered into active military service three times in support of the War on Terrorism. On two occasions, the Battalion as a whole was tapped for an Meritorious Unit Commendation (MUC), the first for its service between October 2004 and June 2005 while assigned or attached to the 411th Civil Affairs Battalion and the second for its outstanding performance between January and December 2005 while serving with the Headquarters and Headquarters Troop of the 11th Armored Cavalry Regiment. In December 2019, the Battalion’s D Company was chosen for an MUC for its service between April 2012 and January 2013 while assigned or attached to the HHC, 2nd Brigade Combat Team of the 2nd Infantry Division

As of October 2021, the 426th Psychological Operations Battalion is assigned to the 358th Civil Affairs Brigade, 351st Civil Affairs Command, a major subcommand of the U.S. Army Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations Command.
