U.S. ARMY 404TH MANEUVER ENHANCEMENT BRIGADE UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 404th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI), or unit crest, is crafted almost entirely in cobalt blue and golden yellow, the official colors of the unit’s branch when it was originally constituted in May 1990 as the 404th Chemical Brigade.

Further acknowledgement of its origins can be seen in the yellow-trimmed blue hexagon between two dragons rampant; the hexagon is a benzene ring and is used for the Chemical Corps branch insignia, while dragons are commonly used for Chemical Corps heraldry as a symbol of steadfast defense. Their placement as “bookends” to the benzene ring suggest the unit’s new Support function and reinforces the motto, “Dragons In Support.”

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Originally activated on 23 June 1990, the 404th Chemical Brigade and associated unit 44th Chemical Battalion were ceremonially inactivated on 23 August 1997 with an effective date of 1 September 1997. The organizational colors were retired to the custody of the Adjutant General of the Illinois National Guard and the Distinctive Unit Insignia redesignated for the 404th Support Detachment 14 April 1998. On the four-year anniversary of the effective date of their inactivation, the HQ and HQ Detachment, 404th Chemical Brigade were reactivated when they were recognized by the State of Illinois on 1 September 2001. One year later, its Distinctive Unit Insignia was redesignated once again for the 404th Chemical Brigade.

In 2008, the 404th Chemical Corps was converted, reorganized, and redesignated as the 404th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade in response to a changing overseas mission. On 1 September 2011—precisely a decade after the unit had been reactivated following a four-year inactivation—the insignia was officially redesignated, with revised symbolism, for the 404th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade (MEB).

The Brigade's most recent overseas deployment came in February 2022 when it assumed responsibility of the Combined Joint Task Force – Horn of Africa (CJTF-HOA) mission from the Nebraska Army National Guard’s 67th (MEB). That mission ended in November 2022 as the Brigade passed the mission of providing critical multifunctional support for CJTF-HOA to the Wisconsin Army National Guard's 157th MEB.
