U.S. ARMY 4TH MEDICAL BRIGADE UNIT CREST (DUI)

Approved in December 1989, the 4th Medical Brigade Distinctive Unit Insignia is replete with gold (embattled castle wall, sunrise, text) to symbolize excellence and high achievement. The fleur-de-lis on the embattlement is a reference to the Brigade’s service in France and Europe during World War II as the 4th Auxiliary Surgical Group, for which it was recognized for participation in five campaigns and was honored with a Meritorious Unit Commendation.

An upright sword with a snake curled around the blade is inspired by the Staff of Asclepius; the snake’s green color symbolizes regeneration and growth and is borrowed from the Army Medical Department Regimental Distinctive Insignia. The sword’s vertical positioning emphasizes the unit motto of “Forward And Ready.”

Following the German surrender in World War II, the unit was briefly redesignated as 897th Medical Professional Services (July to September, 1945) before being inactivated on 28 September 1945. It was assigned for a very short period to Third Army before inactivation in 1950. On 17 July 1988, it was redesignated as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 4th Medical Brigade and assigned to Seventh Army as part of U.S. Army Europe and activated in Germany.

The brigade has been inactivated since that time, but available U.S. Army records do not make clear when its inactivation occurred.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
