U.S. ARMY SPECIAL TROOPS BATTALION, 4TH BCT, 82ND AIRBORNE UNIT CREST (DUI)

On 6 June 2006, the Headquarters Company of the 4th Brigade, 82nd Airborne Division was redesignated as Special Troops Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division. Between 2007 and 2012, the Battalion deployed with the 4th BCT three times to Afghanistan; it received a Meritorious Unit Commendation for each of its first two tours and an Army Valorous Unit Award for its role in Operation Righteous Endeavor.

Commonly called a unit crest or DUI for short, the Distinctive Unit Insignia for Special Troops Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 82nd Airborne Division pays homage to its affiliation with an Airborne Infantry brigade with the four parachutes indicating the numerical designation of its parent organization; the motto “Swift Agile And Lethal” reflects the speed and striking power of Airborne units. The Battalion’s Engineer, Signal Corps, and Military Intelligence components are represented by a pickaxe, orange lightning flashes, and a key, respectively.

As part of the Army’s reorganization effort designed to increase the Engineer capabilities of Brigade Combat Team while reducing troops, the 4th Brigade Special Troops Battalion, 82nd Airborne Division was inactivated along with the rest of the BCT in 2015.

The Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
