The Special Troops Battalion (STB) of the 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Division was originally constituted as the Headquarters and Headquarters Company of the 4th Brigade, 25th Infantry Division—but was promptly inactivated just nine days later on 15 December 1970. On 16 July 2005, the Headquarters Company alone was redesignated as the Special Troops Battalion and activated 16 September 2005, leaving the Headquarters with a separate lineage.

Like the flash worn by personnel in 4th Brigade Combat Team Headquarters, the STB flash features the lightning flash taken from the Shoulder Sleeve Insignia of the 25th Infantry Division, which was inspired by the unit’s nickname or “Tropic Lightning” for its rapid advances in several World War II campaigns. Since 2007, the Battalion or its component units have been awarded two Meritorious Unit Commendations and two Valorous Army Unit Awards.
