U.S. ARMY SPECIAL TROOPS BATTALION, 4TH BCT, 1ST INFANTRY DIVISION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Taken from the unit’s coat of arms that was approved in October 2005, the Distinctive Unit Insignia (also called "unit crest" or DUI) of Special Troops Battalion, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division highlights the capabilities of both the individual units and the Battalion as a whole, which proved that its motto of “Trained And Ready” was no idle claim when it deployed to Iraq just twelves months after its activation.

The dark blue color in the field is a reminder that the Battalion’s overarching mission is to support the combat operations of the 1st Infantry Division (blue is the Infantry color). A scarlet castle recalls the Engeering capabilities of the Battalion, and the key emblazoned on the castle wall stands for the secrets that can be unlocked only through Military Intelligence operations. Lightning flashes behind the wall are a symbol of the speed of modern communications in the Signal Corps, and the star is an emblem of the command and control the Battalion offers to the Brigade. Wavy blue and white bars recall amphibious assault landings, a visual reminder that the Battalion can be deployed almost anywhere on very short notice.

Though inactivated less than a decade after its original formation, the Wolverines of the 4th Brigade Special Troops Battalion (or its subordinate units), 1st Infantry Division were honored with a Valorous Unit Award and two Meritorious Unit Citations.

The Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
