U.S. ARMY 35TH ENGINEER BRIGADE UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 35th Engineer Brigade Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI), frequently referred to as a unit crest, was approved for wear on 7 October 1970. Two crossed bayonets are a reference the unit’s combat capabilities; seeming to hang from their intersection point is a pick and a plumb bob, basic tools that evoke the engineering and construction missions of the brigade.

Between the two bayonets are two wavy, horizontal bars, a reference to the Missouri and Mississippi Rivers and the Brigade’s two home stations at the time (Jefferson City and St. Louis). Combined with the bayonets, the wavy lines form the capital letter “A,” which stands for the Aleutian Islands where the unit fought during World War II. The whitish areas above and below the wavy lines is a visual reference to the cold, foggy climate of the Aleutians. The unit motto, “No Task Too Large,” cements the insignia with a commitment to mission success.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. Guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

A unit in the Missouri Army National Guard, the 35th Engineer Brigade was originally constituted as Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 138th Infantry, an element of the 35th Division on 17 July 1928. Over its nine-plus decades of service, it has been reorganized and redesignated on several occasions, receiving its current designation as HQ and HQ Company, 35th Engineer Battalion in January 1968. Though its only campaign credit is for the Aleutian Islands in World War II, its service in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom led to its selection for a Meritorious Unit Commendation.

As of Autumn 2023, the 35th Engineer Brigade is based at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri.
