U.S. ARMY 346TH PSYCHOLOGICAL OPERATIONS COMPANY BERET FLASH AND/OR OVAL

The 346th Psychological Operations Company oval (officially designated as Airborne background trimming) and its beret flash featuring the same design were both approved on 14 October 2008. On 31 December 2012, the flash was rescinded and replaced with an insignia featuring a completely different design.

More accurately termed an organizational flash, this shield-shaped insignia is worn centered on the stiffener of the maroon beret that has been authorized for wear by personnel in Airborne unit since 1981. Company Officers wear their nonsubdued rank insignia centered on the flash, while Enlisted personnel center the 15th Psychological Operations Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia, or unit crest.

The flash is authorized for all personnel in the unit regardless of their individual Airborne or Airborne-related qualifications, but wear of the oval is limited to those Company personnel who have earned a Parachutist or Air Assault badge. Badges are centered on the embroidered oval to create a border or trim around the badge and the combination is worn on AGSU and ASU coats (including ASU Dress variant), the Class B ASU shirt, and by female Soldiers on the green or blue Army Maternity Tunic.

Guidance on wear of both flash and ovals is found in Chapter 21-32, subsections (a) and (b) of the January 2021 edition of DA PAM 670-1, while detailed instructions regarding the wear and, just as importantly, the placement of the oval-badge combo is found in Chapter 22-16, subsection (b) of the same manual.

The 346th Psychological Operations Company was constituted as the 246th Psychological Operations Company on 20 December 1965. It was activated 10 February 1966 in Vietnam and was subsequently inactivated on 1 January 1968 after taking part in three campaigns and earning a Meritorious Unit Commendation.

Assigned to the Army Reserve since October 1975, the unit was given its current numerical designation as the 346th Psychological Operations Company on 16 June 1996. Since that time, it was officially taken part in the Global War on Terrorism campaign, with additional campaign credits to be determined.

The Company is assigned to the 15th Psychological Operations Battalion, 2nd Psychological Operations Group of the U.S. Army Civil Affairs and Psychological Operations Command. It is headquartered in Whitehall, Ohio, a suburb of Columbus.
