The design of the beret flash and oval (background trimming) designated for the 3rd Battalion, 325th Infantry Regiment takes the Regimental Distinctive Insignia and adds three notches on the left and right sides of the two insignias to denote the unit’s numerical status in the Regiment’s organization. Blue and white, the only two colors used, have both served as the official branch color for Infantry units, with white being worn from the Revolutionary War until 1851 and from 1886 to 1902.
Also called an organizational flash, this shield-shaped insignia is worn on the maroon beret, the color specified for use solely by Airborne units. Officers place their non-subdued insignia of grade on the center of the flash, while Enlisted Soldiers wear their Distinctive Unit Insignia; if the unit has no DUI, as is the case with the 4th Battalion, 325th Infantry Regiment, then they wear the Regimental Distinctive Insignia. Exceptions to this rule involving the Sergeant Major of the Army and the Senior Enlisted Advisor to the Chairman, Joint Chiefs of Staff are detailed in
paragraph 4-10(e) of DA PAM 670-1.Ovals are authorized for wear by personnel who have earned the Parachutist or Air Assault badge. They are placed beneath the badge, with main portion of the badge centered on the oval or background trimming. The oval-badge combination is worn on both Service Uniform coats (AGSU, ASU, and ASU Dress variation) and on Service Uniform shirts, as well as on the blue or green Army Maternity Tunic (female Soldiers only).
