U.S. ARMY 312TH MILITARY INTELLIGENCE BATTALION, LRSD BERET FLASH AND/OR OVAL

Beret flashes are worn by all personnel in the authorized unit, centered on the stiffener of the colored beret that corresponds to a specific unit classification: maroon for Airborne, tan for Ranger, green for Special Forces, and brown for Security Assistance Command/Brigade. Centered on the flash are either insignia of rank (Officers) or the Distinctive Unit Insignia (or Regimental Distinctive Insignia if no DUI has been approved for the unit). Ovals, or background trimming, are beneath behind Parachutist and Air Assault Badges, but only by personnel who have been awarded those badges and who are serving in a unit that has been authorized a background trimming, i.e., a unit designated as Airborne or Air Assault.

Authorization for organizational flashes and ovals is found in AR 670-1; wear guidance for these two items is detailed in paragraph 21-32 of January 2021 edition of DA PAM 670-1.

The 312th Military Intelligence Battalion is assigned to the 470th Military Intelligence Brigade and is headquartered at Fort Sam Houston, Texas. Its operations include all-source, human intelligence (HUMINT), and counterintelligence designed to support U.S Army South and the United States Southern Command. It was originally constituted in December 1943 as the 23rd Signal Construction Battalion and activated 10 February 1944, and as a Signal unit it took part in four campaigns across World War II and the Korean War.

But the majority of the campaign credits ascribed to it were brought to the Battalion when it was redesignated from 312th Army Security Agency Battalion to its current title in October 1981. At the same time, its A and B Companies were consolidated with the 371st Army Security Agency Company and the 191st Military Intelligence Company; together, these two units were credited with nearly thirty campaigns and numerous military decorations.

Since that consolidation, the Battalion’s military decorations include two Meritorious Unit Commendations and a Valorous Unit Award (less Company B) for its support of the 1st Brigade, 1st Division during heavy action in Al-Fallujah and Ar-Ramandi between April and August 2004.
