U.S. ARMY 31ST MILITARY POLICE DETACHMENT OVAL

It is unclear when the 31st Military Police Detachment (CID) Airborne oval—officially known as Airborne background trimming in Army regulations—was approved for the unit, which was originally formed as the 31st Military Police Criminal Investigation Section on 31 July 1944 and activated on 17 August 1944 (the unit was awarded European-African-Middle Eastern Theater, Streamer without inscription).

The U.S. Army Center of Military History’s lineage for the unit becomes somewhat confusing beyond this point, stating it was reorganized and redesignated as the 41st Military Police Detachment on 1 October 1954 but never stating when it was redesignated to its current numerical designation.

Last updated on 9 February 2007, the lineage never shows the unit becoming an Airborne unit or being assigned as a component in an Airborne unit, which is the primary factor in determining whether an oval is approved for the unit. It does state that after a nearly 14-year period of inactivation, the unit was reactivated on 17 September 1991 at Fort Campbell, Kentucky.

But the Detachment’s military decorations—one Meritorious Unit Commendation for support of Operations Iraqi and Enduring Freedom between March 2003 and April 2004 (Army General Orders NO. 2009–12) and a second for service between December 2005 and December (Army General Orders NO. 2010-17) —reveal it earned them while assigned to the 10th Military Police Battalion, an Airborne unit based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky, which in 2021 is still the Detachments home. The design of the 31st MP Detachment’s oval is also the same as 10th Military Police Battalion’s oval, except it uses a single horizontal white line instead of the three found on the insignia of the 10th MP Battalion.
