U.S. ARMY 308TH MILITARY INTELLIGENCE BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 308th Military Intelligence Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI), or unit crest, was approved for wear on 10 May 1994. Its shield section contains a saltire (“X” shape) that symbolizes strength and cooperation with other units. A pair of griffins placed on a background of oriental blue (official branch color for Military Intelligence) embody alertness, vigilance, and courage, reflecting the unit’s motto “Guardians Of America” and its mission to use intelligence to safeguard our country and ensure the effectiveness of our military efforts. A red compass rose in the upper portion of the insignia is an allusion to the ability of the Battalion to collect intelligence from across the globe and provide its analysis and speedy dissemination. A black scroll with a silver script for the unit motto emphasizes the night and day scope of the Military Intelligence mission.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 308th Military Intelligence Battalion was originally constituted in the Organized Reserve Corps (Army Reserve after July 19052) as HHD, 308th Communication Reconnaissance Battalion on 31 January 1952 and activated at New York City. Its HHD was reorganized as a Headquarters and Headquarters Company in January 1956 and on 1 September 1956 it was redesignated as HHC, 308th Army Security Agency Battalion. It was subsequently inactivated from 1 July 1959 to 1 February 1990 when it was redesignated as HHC, 308th Military Intelligence Battalion and simultaneously withdrawn from the Army Reserve and allotted to the Regular Army.

Redesignated as Headquarters, Headquarters and Service Company, 308th Military Intelligence Battalion on 17 October 1991, it was activated in Panama (its organic elements were concurrently constituted and activated). Briefly inactivated between 16 September 1995 and 16 October 1996, the Battalion was moved to its Fort George G. Meade, Maryland.

In 2013, a Detachment of the Battalion was attached to the 319th Military Intelligence Battalion  and deployed to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, and in January 2014 the Detachment’s superior service between 8 March and 10 October 2013 was recognized with a Meritorious Unit Commendation for assisting the Battalion in its “exceptional execution of intelligence missions in support of the Combined Joint Task Force-101 for the Regional Command-East and the International Security Assistance Force.”

Still based at Fort George G. Meade, the Battalion was assigned to the 902nd Military Intelligence Group until the Group's inactivation in July 2022, which was concurrent with the activation of the U.S. Army Counterintelligence Command (ACIC).
