U.S. ARMY 3RD BRIGADE, 104TH INFANTRY DIVISION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, the Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e) "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The Distinctive Unit Insignia of the 3rd Brigade, 104th Infantry Division pays tribute to its origins as a Engineer unit while embracing its current mission of combat support training. A series of interlaced and interlocking beams recalls the work of Engineers in establishing and hardening fortifications, emphasized by the use of the Corps of Engineers branch color of scarlet used for the field. The Brigade served as Engineer organization from 1921 to 1967.

A scroll at the bottom, on the other hand, is inscribed with the word “TIAKOTEMEN,” which according to the book A Dictionary of the Kalispel or Flathead Indian Language, Parts 1-2 by Joseph Giorda is pronounced tiákotemen and means “to carry on a conflict with.” It is the source of inspiration for the unit motto “FIGHT ON,” and reflects the Brigade’s commitment to providing Soldiers with the training required to ensure they can provide combat support essential to continue a fight until victory is achieved.

The 3rd Brigade, 104th Infantry Division was converted to a training unit on 24 November 1967 and was activated 10 January 1968. Since 2005, the Brigade has been leading training courses at Fort Lewis in Washington. In addition to its Headquarters, it consists of seven Battalion from unique Regiments (304th, 319th, 321st, 391st, 399th, 415th, and 518th).
