U.S. ARMY 295TH INFANTRY REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 295th Infantry Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia (also known as a DUI or unit crest), approved on 27 March 1926, pays homage to the militia of Puerto Rico, the Puerto Rico National Guard’s forerunner that staunchly defended the island against English aggression in 1797. The 295th Infantry Regiment was a unit in the Puerto Rican Army National Guard. It was constituted in January 1923 and disbanded in 1964.

A shield with blue background reflects the organization’s status as part of the Infantry branch. In the center of the shield is a castle and rocks that represent the isle of San Jan, site of an attempted English invasion in April of 1797. The castle’s golden walls and red symbolize the treasure and blood that was expended in defense of San Juan, while the lion perched atop the tower denotes that it was the offspring of the Spanish lion that defended it. Sailing boats headed away from the isle and toward the open sea are the retreating British ships, who abandoned the invasion attempt after less than two weeks.

“Todo Por La Patria,” the unit motto, is Spanish for “All For The Country.”

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

For Enlisted personnel, the insignia is centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
