U.S. ARMY 27TH INFANTRY BRIGADE COMBAT TEAM UNIT CREST (DUI)

Originally designed for the 27th Infantry Brigade of the New York Army National Guard and officially authorized for wear in April 1995, this Distinctive Unit Insignia was redesignated for the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (IBCT) in 2007. Also known as a DUI or unit crest, the insignia symbolizes the unit’s role in the service of fellow New Yorkers and pays tribute to its storied legacy of combat service to the country. Prominently featured is the word “Empire,” which is both the brigade’s motto and its official nickname.

In 2006, the 27th Infantry Brigade became the 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team (IBCT) after a New York National Guard “reset” that was part of a national reorganization of all National Guard forces. That unit traces its lineage back to the 27th Infantry Division, which you can read about on our Web page for the Brigade’s shoulder patch (SSI—link below).
In 2007, the 27th IBCT deployed as a unit for the first time to Afghanistan, relieving fellow National Guard Units as part of Task Force Phoenix. After that deployment was complete and it returned stateside, it was sent once again to Afghanistan to train the Afghani National forces in military and policing operations.

No longer under the shadow of the exploits of the 27th Infantry Division, the 27th IBCT continued making its own history locally and overseas. In 2012, the 27th IBCT was called on to assist with the emergency response to the devastation of hurricane Sandy and tropical storms Irene and Lee in 2011. The unit’s work in its home state did not go unnoticed by filmmakers, who employed some of the members of the brigade to depict military forces in the action thrillers Cloverfield and I Am Legend, both filmed in New York City.

The Brigade’s DUI is shaped like a triangle with gold sides and a broad base. Emerging from the base is a blue arrow that symbolizes the Army’s 27th Infantry Battalion’s Philippine Presidential Unit Citation; it was incorporated into the new design on April 13, 1995. The red background for the motto is for the brigade’s Meritorious Unit Citation. Crisscrossing the mountain and the arrow are two black swords that represent strength and teamwork.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
