U.S. ARMY 228TH SIGNAL BRIGADE UNIT CREST (DUI)

Originally formed in the South Carolina National Guard as an Infantry Company in 1907, the 228th Signal Brigade—also referred to as the 228th Theater Tactical Signal Brigade—is currently based in Spartanburg as part of the South Carolina Army National Guard. In addition to its HQ and Headquarters Company, the Brigade also has four subordinate Signal Battalions: 105th, 108th, 111th, and 151st.

As an Infantry Company in the 1st Regiment of Infantry, the unit served along the Mexican border as part of the Wilson Administration’s Pancho Villa Expedition. During World War I, it fought in three campaigns—Somme Offensive, Ypres-Lys, Flanders 1918—and followed up that service by taking part in two campaigns (Northern France and Rhineland) in the Second World War. As of Autumn 2023, the 228th Signal Brigade is an active unit in the South Carolina Army National Guard. Headquartered in Spartanburg, South Carolina, it is one of only two Theater Tactical Signal Brigades in the National Guard.

The unit’s wartime actions and its rich tradition in the South Carolina Army National Guard are reflected in the designs of the 228th Signal Brigade unit crest, or Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI). Two fleur-de-lis represent the Brigade’s action in freeing France in two World War, while the crescent in the middle is take from the South Carolina state flag. The lightning flash on the crescent reflect the nature of the Brigade’s mission as a Signal unit. A wavy scroll with the unit motto “Strength In Electronics” recalls the unit’s service along the Rio Grande, while the three mountain peaks hearken to the unit’s home near Spartanburg, South Carolina.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
