U.S. ARMY 198TH INFANTRY BRIGADE UNIT CREST (DUI)

Often called a unit crest or DUI, the 198th Infantry Brigade Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved for wear on 6 July 1967. In the center, a blue dragon represents enemies the Brigade might face. It is engulfed on the left and right by red and orange flames, similar to those seen on the Brigade’s Shoulder Sleeve Insignia and its Combat Service ID Badge, symbolizing the firepower of a modern-day Brigade. An upright bayonet, with its handle below the unit motto “Brave And Bold” and its tip emerging at the top of the dragon’s head, has impaled the dragon and defeated it, reflecting the fighting spirit and will to win that the Brigade carries into every mission.

so known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been
authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

During the Vietnam War, the 198th Infantry Brigade was assigned to the 23rd Infantry Division, which had been originally formed outside the continental U.S. during World War II and had been officially designated as the “Americal Division” rather than given a numerical designation (it was designated the 23rd Infantry Division in 1954).

In September 1968, U.S. Army Vietnam requested that the 11th, 196th, and 198th Infantry Brigades be redesignated as 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Brigades, 23rd Infantry Division and assigned as organic elements of the Division, but the proposal was rejected by General William Westmoreland, who felt the change would diminish the unit’s histories and did not wish to change the designations of those units already serving in Vietnam. The 198th Infantry Brigade eventually received credit for participation in twelve Vietnam War campaigns and its exemplary service was recognized with three Republic of Vietnam Crosses of Gallantry with Palm.

As of Autumn 2023, the 198th Infantry Brigade is stationed at Fort Moore where it is tasked with training Soldiers
assigned to the Infantry branch. It consists of five Infantry Battalions: two from the 19th Infantry Regiment and one apiece from the 50th, 54th, and 58th Infantry Regiments.
