U.S. ARMY 194TH CAVALRY REGIMENT 1ST SQUADRON LRSD BERET FLASH AND/OR OVAL

The 1st Squadron, 194th Cavalry Regiment was in service from February 1969 to September 1992 and was part of the 47th Infantry Division for all but the final eighteen months of that time, when it redesignated as part of the 34th Infantry Division.

According to the Army insignia reference book U.S. Army Patches, Flashes and Ovals, the 194th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Squadron LRSD (Long-Range Surveillance Detachment) organizational flash and Airborne background trimming were both worn beginning in May 1989.

Also called beret flashes, the organizational flash is worn on one of the four colored berets authorized by the Army to represent specific types of units, i.e., maroon for Airborne, green for Special Forces, Tan for Rangers, and most recently brown for Security Assistance Command/Brigade.

Flashes are worn centered on the stiffener of the beret, with NCOs and Junior Enlisted Soldiers wearing their Distinctive Unit Insignia (or Regimental Distinctive Insignia if their unit has no DUI) and Officers wearing non-subdued insignia of grade on the beret in the same fashsion.

Understandably called an “oval,” Airborne background trimming is worn by personnel who meet two criteria: they serve in a unit that has been designated as Airborne or Air Assault and have earned either Parachutist or Air Assault badge. The oval is worn beneath the badge, with the main portion of the badge centered on the oval (parts of the Senior and Master Parachutist badges will unavoidably project above the background trimming).

Since the Army introduced the Army Green Service Uniform (ASGU) as the replacement for the Blue ASU, ovals are worn the coats and shirts of the AGSU and ASU (except on the Class B AGSU) by all eligible personnel and on the green or blue Army Maternity Tunic only by female Soldiers. Current wear guidance for both Airborne background trimming and organizational flashes is found in the most recent edition of DA PAM 670-1, paragraph 21-32.

Customers seeking to wear these insignia on the old Army Green Service Uniform that was in use while the LRSD, 1st Squadron, 194th Cavalry Regiment was active should refer to the Army uniform regulations that were in effect at that time. These can be found in the February 2005 edition of AR 670-1.
