U.S. ARMY 192ND CAVALRY REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 192nd Cavalry Regiment Distinctive Unit Insignia, also called a unit crest of a DUI, was approved on 24 February 1997. It scarlet and white colors are traditionally associated with Cavalry units, with the white disc on the red portion of the shield representing Troop E (organized as an element of the 92nd Infantry Brigade) and its location on Puerto Rico, the “Pearl of the Caribbean.” Puerto Rico’s Spanish heritage is commemorated by the medieval knight on horseback, a symbol of traditional values of honor and loyalty still held today, with the horse rearing up to attack serving as an embodiment of the military readiness of the organization. The horse is black to symbolize the unit’s roles of  light reconnaissance and security, reinforcing the motto of CABALLERIA AL FRENTE (“Scouts Forward”).

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 192nd Cavalry Regiment was constituted in the Puerto Rico Army National Guard on 7 April 1964 as the 192nd Cavalry, a parent regiment in the Combat Arms Regimental System (CARS), and organized 1 May 1964 to consist of Troop E, an element of the 92nd Infantry Brigade. It was withdrawn from CARS on 27 October 1987 and reorganized under the U.S. Army Regimental System, with Troop E remaining an element of the 92nd Infantry Brigade. It was called into active Federal service in June 2003, but there is no record from readily accessible public documents indicating the length or location of its deployment.

It is unclear whether Troop E and with it the 192nd Cavalry Regiment was inactivated, deactivated, disbanded, or reflagged when the 92nd Infantry Brigade was redesignated as the 92nd Maneuver Enhancement Brigade in 2008, but in any event it was no longer listed in the Puerto Rico Army National Guard’s Table of Organization following the change.
