U.S. ARMY 16TH MILITARY POLICE BRIGADE BERET FLASH AND/OR OVAL

Originally constituted and activated in 1966 as a Military Police Group, the 16th Military Police Brigade was reorganized and redesignated a brigade on 16 July 1981. As part of XVIII Corps, it became an Airborne unit, and as such its flash was approved on 20 May 1982; the background trimming (oval) was approved ten months later on 8 March 1983.

The 16th’s status as the Army’s only Airborne Military Police organization was reflected in the Brigade’s nickname “One of a Kind,” but in October 2008 the motto became a reference to a storied past rather than reflecting a unique status in the Army TOE when the Brigade’s jump status was terminated. Besides the flash and trim being rescinded, active-duty personnel in the Brigade also lost the right to wear the “Airborne” tab on the Shoulder Sleeve Insignia.

In its 50-plus years of existence, the 16th MP Brigade has been deployed numerous times, beginning with the Vietnam conflict in which it took part in 13 of 17 named Army campaigns and earned two Meritorious Unit Commendations (MUC). It also garnered campaign credits for the First Gulf War (two campaign credits and an MUC), War on Terrorism (two campaign credits), and Operation Iraqi Freedom (four campaigns), and was honored with three MUCs between 2005 and 2010.

Currently headquartered at Fort Liberty (formerly Fort Bragg), the 16th MP Brigade comprises its HQ and HQ Company, five MP battalions, and a Civil Affairs battalion.
