U.S. ARMY 148TH BRIGADE SUPPORT BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 148th Brigade Support Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia (also called a “unit crest” or just DUI for short) was approved on 10 February 1977 for the 148th Support Battalion. It is not clear when it was approved for wear after the unit became the 148th Brigade Support Battalion, but it is clearly displayed as the organization’s DUI on its Facebook page. Four conflicts in which the unit’s predecessors served are commemorated on the insignia. A white chevron, traditional heraldic symbol of support, also is an allusion to a tepee and thus the Indian War. A saltire (“X”) is a reference to the Confederate battle fag and serving during the Civil War. Fleurs-de-lis denote service in France in the First and Second World War, while the green area symbolizes an island, an image alluding to service in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater of World War II.

The blue used in the saltire recalls the Presidential Unit Citation credited to the Battalion for action in Hurtgen Forest in World War II; green and red represent the French Croix de Guerre with Palm (the Battalion’s campaign streamer for this is embroidered with the word “France”) and the Belgian Fourragere (embroidered “Belgium” and “Ardennes”). Scarlet in the fess (middle) is the color of military support and leadership. Finally, the combination of the red and white with the blue from the saltire suggests the state flag of Georgia, the state to which the organization was allotted. "Hone The Cutting Edge," is a double-entendre referencing both the culinary mission of some of its subordinate units and the Battalion's thorough preparations for successful mission execution.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
