U.S. ARMY 142ND BATTLEFIELD SURVEILLANCE BRIGADE UNIT CREST (DUI)

Whether through the use of signal-gathering technology, unmanned aerial vehicles, human-intelligence collection, or long-range surveillance patrols, the Battlefield Surveillance Brigade’s primary responsibility is the defense of national security, represented on the 142nd Battlefield Surveillance Brigade Distinctive Unit Insignia (also DUI, or unit crest) as a red and white shield. A lightning bolt superimposed on the shield is a symbol of the speed of modern communications that are essential to the Brigade’s Military Intelligence mission.

Oriental blue is used for the scroll on which the unit motto, “Truth Through Vigilance,” is inscribed and stands for the Military Intelligence components of the Brigade. Similarly, red and yellow are used to reflect the Cavalry squadron in the Brigade and its ability to conduct successful reconnaissance missions.

The 142nd Battlefield Surveillance Brigade Distinctive Unit Insignia was officially approved for wear by authorized members of the Brigade on 3 March 2011. Five years later, the Army announced the unit would be inactivated, with the inactivation ceremony being held on 18 September 2016 at Fort Quarles-Flowers Armory in Decator, Alabama.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
