U.S. ARMY 142ND AVIATION REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

The Distinctive Unit Insignia (commonly referred to as a “unit crest” or a DUI) of the 142nd Aviation Regiment was originally approved while the organization was designated as the 42nd Aviation Battalion on 2 August 1968. It was redesignated for the 142nd Aviation Regiment, with revised description and symbolism, on 1 October 1987. The insignia’s silver wings instantly identify the unit as an Aviation organization, while the rainbow represents the famed “Rainbow Division,” the 42nd Infantry Division, to which the 42nd Aviation Battalion once belonged.

The motto “Over The Rainbow” highlight the unit’s association with the 42nd Infantry Division, which continues to this day (2020): the 3rd Battalion, sole active unit of the 142nd Aviation Regiment, is assigned to the 42nd Combat Aviation Brigade, a component of the 42nd Infantry Division.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 142nd Aviation Regiment was constituted as a parent regiment in the U.S. Army Regimental system on 1 October 1987; it was concurrently organized from existing units, including the 42nd Aviation Battalion, to consist of the 1st Battalion and three companies (D, E, and F), all elements of the 42nd Infantry Division.

Since 1990, the Regiment has been reorganized a half-dozen times, altering the number of active battalions and/or companies under its organizational bailiwick. In 2005, it was redesignated from 142nd Aviation to 142nd Aviation Regiment, and the following year its 1st Battalion was inactivated and cased its colors; in 2008, it would be honored with a Meritorious Unit Commendation for service in Iraq between 16 February 2004 to 11 January 2005. As of Summer 2023, the 142nd Aviation Regiment consists of a single Battalion, the 3rd Assault Helicopter Battalion (3-142nd AVN), assigned to the 42nd Combat Aviation Brigade.

the Regiment comprises a HQ and HQ Company at Ronkonkoma, New York, and four companies (A, B, D, and E).
