U.S. ARMY 111TH MEDICAL BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 111th Medical Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia (also called a unit crest or a DUI) was originally approved on 8 December 1976 for wear by members of the 117th Combat Support Hospital. It was redesignated just under a decade later for the 217th Evacuation Hospital on 25 September 1986. On 12 April 1996, it was redesignated for the 111th Medical Battalion. Since that time, the 111th Medical Battalion has been redesignated as the 111th Multifunctional Medical Battalion in the Texas Army National Guard, where it is assigned to the 36th Sustainment Brigade and is stationed at Camp Bullis, part of Fort Sam Houston at Joint Base San Antonio.

At the center of the insignia is a Greek cross, a longtime symbol of aid and assistance that represents the organization and denotes its primary mission. A horizontal bayonet suggests combat and is an allusion to the organization’s function as a combat-support unit, particularly when it was designated as a Combat Support or Evacuation Hospital.

A single white star dominates the insignia and points to the Battalion’s home area of Texas, the “Lone Star State,” and its service in the Texas Army National Guard. The color scheme of red, white, and blue are of course the national colors and are also the colors of the Texas state flag. “Life For The Wounded” reinforces the combat-support aspect of the Battalion’s mission that is suggested by the bayonet.

Distinctive Unit Insignias is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
