U.S. ARMY 108TH INFANTRY REGIMENT UNIT CREST (DUI)

The nickname of the 108th Infantry Regiment, “Third New York,” recognizes the Regiment’s origins in 1898 as the 3rd New York Volunteer Infantry. Though mustered for Federal service during the Spanish-American War, the Regiment saw no combat action. It would be reorganized as the 3rd Infantry Regiment in 1907 and serve along the Mexican border in 1916 before being mustered into Federal service in 1917; in October of that year it was reorganized and redesignated as the 108th Infantry and assigned to 27th Division as part of the 54th Infantry Brigade. It was awarded credit for participation in three World War I campaigns: Somme Offensive, Ypres-Lys, and Flanders 1918.

Besides the Spanish-American War and World War I, the 108th has also earned campaign participation credits for World War II and the War on Terrorism, with specific companies of the Regiment’s 2nd Battalion awarded standalone campaign participation credit. In the War on Terrorism, subordinate units of the 2nd Battalion were honored with Valorous Unit Awards for their actions between 1 October 2004 and 1 November 2004 and 12 February 2004 and 15 February 2005, and the entire Regiment was awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation for their outstanding performance between 15 February 2005 and 26 December 2004.

As of the Spring of 2023, the 108th Infantry Regiment has only one active Battalion, the 2nd (2-108th INF). It is assigned to the Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 27th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, 42nd Infantry Division of the New York Army National Guard.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, the Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia."

First approved on 29 April 1925, the 108th Infantry Regiment's Distinctive Unit Insignia pays tribute to the Regiment’s wartime service in France during the First World War. The fasces in the middle represent France, with the golden lions on either side symbols of Britain and Belgium supporting their ally. The unit motto, “VIRTUE NON-VERBIS,” translates into English as “By Valor, Not Words.”
