U.S. ARMY 105TH MILITARY POLICE BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 105th Military Police Battalion Unit Crest, also known as a unit crest or referred to by the initialism DUI, was approved on 1 September 2003, the same day the unit was first designated as part of the Military Police branch. In fact, since its original constitution in January 1974 in the North Carolina Army National Guard, the unit had been designated as an Aviation Battalion, Signal Battalion, Support Battalion, and a Quartermaster Battalion. The peaks, seven in all, also highlight the values of the U.S. Army: Duty, Honor, Loyalty, Selfless Service, Respect, Integrity, and Personal Courage.

In the center of the insignia are a fasces, pistol, and scale of justice, with the first two crossed (saltirewise) and placed over the scales: the imagery is taken from the Military Police Regimental coat of arms. Fasces has served as a symbol magisterial authority; the pistol is a traditional MP image embodying law enforcement and the keeping of order; the scales are self-explanatory. Three stars on three embattlements allude to the three words on the MP regimental insignia: Assist, Protect, Defend. Fittingly, the unit motto of “Ready When Called” also consists of just three words.

The Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

Though originally organized at Greensboro, North Carolina in 1974, the 105th Military Police Battalion has been stationed at Asheville near the Tennessee border since 1991. As mentioned above, the unit had served in a variety of branches and roles before becoming a Military Police Battalion in 2003, and it is only since that time that the unit, part of the North Carolina Army National Guard, has been called into active Federal service. Ordered into service in August 2004, the Battalion was relieved from Federal duty in October of the following year and was subsequently awarded a Meritorious Unit Commendation for its service during this period.

The 105th Military Police Battalion is assigned to the 130th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade.
