The shield-shaped organizational flash, usually just called a flash, is worn centered on the stiffener of an appropriately colored beret. Officers place their non-subdued rank insignia in the center of the flash; NCOs and Junior Enlisted Soldiers wear their Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI) in the same location; if the unit does not have a DUI, Enlisted personnel will wear their Regimental Distinctive Insignia in its place.
Referred to as background trimming in Army Regulations, ovals are worn beneath Parachutist or Air Assault Badges on Service Uniform (AGSU and blue ASU) Coats and Shirts and on the blue or green Army Maternity Tunic (female Soldiers only). The main portion of the badge is centered on the oval, but the star and star-and-wreath of the Senior and Master Parachutist will project just above the trimming.
The badge and trimming are considered a single item for measurement and placement consideration; measurement is from the edge of the trimming (or top of the star). If the lapel of the Service/Dress Coat covers the badge or trimming, they can be worn aligned with the left edge of ribbons or medals.
