U.S. ARMY 101ST MILITARY INTELLIGENCE BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Oriental blue and silver gray are used in the 101st Military Intelligence Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia, AKA a “unit crest” or DUI, to denote the unit’s affiliation in the Military Intelligence Corps. The sun, clouds, and atmosphere are represented in the invected chief (top third of the shield portion), which are truly the main fields of operation for units employed in combat electronic-warfare intelligence. The checkered background alludes to a chessboard and is a symbol of strategy. In the center, a crossed sword and lighting flash symbolize the unit’s military capabilities and the speed of modern communications respectively, while the key intersecting them is a longtime emblem of intelligence and security. “TRUST VIGILANCE LOYALTY” was the unit motto.

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-
1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The 101st Military Intelligence Battalion was constituted and activated at Fort Riley, Kansas on 16 September 1980, with two other units—the 337th Army Security Agency Company (originally formed in July 1952 as the 337th Communication Reconnaissance Company) and the 1st Military Intelligence Company (originally constituted as the 1st Counter Intelligence Corps Detachment in July 1944)—concurrently reorganized and redesignated as the Battalion’s A and B companies. The Battalion was inactivated on 15 November 1995, but only for a brief period: it was activated again 16 February 1996 in Germany. It was subsequently inactivated in 2006, with its colors being cased during a ceremony held on 9 June 2006 at Leighton Barracks, Wuerzburg, Germany.

While the only decoration awarded to the Battalion as a whole was an Army Superior Unit Award for the years 1996-1997, the older units that were annexed and redesignated as Companies A and B had earned many military honors prior to joining the Battalion. Company A (the 337th Army Security Agency Company when annexed) was the recipient of an impressive five Meritorious Unit commendations for service in Vietnam between 1965 and 1970, as well as a Republic of Vietnam Cross Gallantry with Palm and a Civil Action Honor Medal, First Class.

The World War II service of Company B (1st Military Intelligence Company when annexed) had been recognized with two French Croix de Guerre with Palm and a French Croix de Guerre Fourragere and a Belgian Fourragere for two citations in the Orders of the Day of the Belgian Army. In Vietnam, while designated as the 1st Military Intelligence Detachment and 1st Military Intelligence Company, the unit earned two Meritorious Unit Commendations, a Republic of Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, and a Civil Action Honor Medal, First Class.
