U.S. ARMY 10TH SIGNAL BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 10th Signal Battalion was originally constituted on 27 August 1942 as the 110th Signal Company and activated the following September at Camp Carson in Colorado. Reorganized and redesignated as the 110the Signal Platoon on 15 July 1943, it was assigned to the 10th Light Division (later redesignated as the 10th Mountain Division) before being again reorganized and redesignated on 6 November 1944 as the 110th Mountain Signal Company. Serving with the 10th Light Division, the unit earned two streamers for action in the Apennines and Po Valley campaigns.

Following the war, the unit was redesignated the 10th Signal Company in June 1948 and activated at Fort Riley in July. It was given its final redesignation on 1 July 1957 when it became the 10th Signal Battalion and was activated on 1 July 1957 in German, only to find itself inactivated about a year later on 14 June 1958. It would remain inactive for nearly 30 years, finally being reactivated on 1 February 1986 at Fort Drum, New York. Assigned to the 10th Mountain Division, it was inactivated for the last time in the mid-2000s when the introduction of Special Troops Battalions and their Signal capabilities made it redundant as part of the 10th Mountain Division.

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

The 10th Signal Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia features the unit motto, “Voice of the Mountain,” reflecting its service with the 10th Mountain Division. In the center of the insignia is a dancetty partition that simulates mountain peaks, an allusion to the Po Valley and the mountainous terrain the unit served in during World War II. The stylized mountain peaks also refer to its designation as the 110th Mountain Signal and also allude to its ties to the state of Colorado. Crossed swords with lightning bolts for blades signify the presence of the Signal battalion within an Infantry division.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
