U.S. 10TH COMBAT SUPPORT HOSPITAL UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 10th Field Hospital has come full circle since it was originally constituted on 23 June 1942 under that designation. In 1952 it was reorganized and redesignated as the 10th Evacuation Hospital, and over twenty years later (1972) it was refashioned as the 10th Combat Support Hospital; a decade later it became the 10th Surgical Hospital on 16 August 1983. It reverted back to Combat Support Hospital on 16 December 1992, and a quarter-century later was given its most recent designation, which was the same as its first: the 10th Field Hospital.

But “Field Hospital” has an entirely different meaning in the Army of the 21st century. The Army selected the 10th as the first Medical Department unit to convert to the new Field Hospital Design, reconfiguring the previous 248-bed Combat Support Hospital into a 32-bed facility that can be augmented with three additional detachments that include a 24-bed surgical unit, a 32-bed medical area, and a 60-bed Intermediate Care Ward. As a Field Hospital, the 10th now operates under the command of the 627th Hospital Center.

The 10th Field Hospital Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI) feature a white saltire superimposed over a maroon cross (maroon and white are Army Medical Department colors). “IN CRUCE VINCAM,” Latin for “I Shall Conquer By The Cross,” is a reference to the cross that is universally used as an emblem for the medical care and treatment soldiers and civilians harmed by combat. The 10th Field Hospital's Special Designation, "Mountain Medics," refers to its home station at Fort Carson, Colorado.

The Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Full guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
