1st Information Operations (IO) Battalion is one of two major subordinate units of the U.S. Army’s 1st Information Operations Command (Land), a component of U.S. Army Cyber Command. The 1st IO Command was previously known as the Land Information Warfare Activity Information Dominance Center.
Based in Fort Belvoir, Virginia, the 1st IO Battalion deploys in support of unit operations; takes part in unit exercises and training programs; analyzes and assess a unit’s position and security in the Information environment; assists in IO planning from tactical to strategic levels; oversees and developer IO procedures, policies, and accreditation processes; and trains and certifies OPSEC Officers.
The unit’s overarching offensive and defensive mission objectives are summed up in its unit motto found on the 1st IO Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI), “CUSTODIA INDICIUM AUSUM,” Latin for “Protection Information Exploitation.”

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been
authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. DUIs are not worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.
For Enlisted personnel, the insignia is centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.
