UNITED STATES ARMY NORTH UNIT CREST (DUI)

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

An Army Service Component Command that is part of United States Northern Command, United States Army North was originally constituted in the Regular Army as Headquarters and Headquarters Company, United States Fifth Army on 1 December 1942. It was activated on 5 January 1943 and General Mark Clark, who had become the youngest Major General (2 stars) in the Army when promoted in April 1942 and then the youngest Lieutenant General (3 stars) after a promotion just eleven months later, was named its Commander.

Redesignated as Fifth United States Army on 1 January 1957, the organization would spend the next five decades as a Command and Control HQ for Army Reserve and National Guard Troops, responsible for their training as well as defense of the continental U.S. It retained homeland defense responsibilities and was also tasked with defense support of state and local authorities when it was redesignated as U.S. Army North in 2004. As of Winter 2024, U.S. Army North's Headquarters and Headquarters Battalion are based at Fort Sam Houston in Texas.

The blue mosque that forms the focal point of the U.S. Army North Distinctive Unit Insignia DUI, or unit crest, is adapted from the Shoulder Sleeve Insignia worn first by United States Fifth Army and now by U.S. Army North personnel. It alludes to the fact that Headquarters, U.S. Fifth Army was activated in Morocco in January 1943. Behind it is a white, Florentine style fleur-de-lis to commemorate its service in Italy during World War II; the five stars are for five campaigns the Army fought in Italy, and their V-shaped arrangement suggests the Roman numeral for five and thus the unit’s numerical designation.

This insignia was originally approved for Fifth United States Army on 31 October 1968. It was redesignated for U.S. Army North, with updated symbolism and description, on 19 December 2006.
