U.S. ARMY CHAPLAIN CENTER AND SCHOOL UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

The Chaplain Center and School’s DUI has undergone several design changes since it was originally introduced in April 1952. In the original incarnation, a cross was superimposed over an open scroll from the Torah, all on a black shield with no text.

This was followed in 1961 by an insignia with a scroll of text around the sides and bottom of the shield that said, “The Fear of The Lord Is the Beginning of Wisdom,” with a cross (Christianity) placed beside a rendering of the stone tablets with the Ten Commandments and a Star of David (Judaism) above it—but with Roman numerals (Roman Catholicism) on the tablets.

That insignia was cancelled in February 1993 and replaced with the current version, which features a gold-trimmed blue shield enwrapped with a scroll inscribed with “The Fear of The Lord Is the Beginning of Wisdom.” At the peak of the shield is a demi-sun emanating rays of light, both alluding to the provision and presence of God in nature.

Below the demi-sun is a dove holding an olive branch, a longtime symbol of peace that also embodies the mission of the Chaplain Center and School to make known the detriment of war and constantly strive for peace in its stead. An open Bible is at the center of the insignia to denote the primacy of God’s Word in

The sun and rays allude to the provision and presence of God in nature. The dove with olive branch, a traditional symbol of peace, embodies the Center and School's mission in the Army to teach the detriment of war and strive for peace. The pages of the open Bible represent the primacy of God's Word.
