U.S. ARMY 86TH TRAINING DIVISION UNIT CREST (DUI)

Also known as a unit crest or DUI, a Distinctive Unit Insignia is worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1,
Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.

This insignia was originally approved for the 86th U.S. Army Reserve Command on 29 April 1970. It was redesignated for the 86th Training Brigade with revised description and symbolism on 16 September 2010. Just two days later, it was redesignated effective for the 86th Training Division with updated symbolism. A spread-winged black hawk is a reference to the 86th Division’s nickname of “Black Hawk,” which in turn was inspired by a renowned leader of the Sauk Indian tribe. A disc on the breast of the black hawk has two blue bands; they represent the Infantry Division (its original designation) and Training Division (which became in 2009, first as a brigade). The bands, which are taken from the flag of Chicago, also suggest Lake Michigan.

Three crowns on the insignia represent the crowns of the Magi (the wise men from the East who followed the star of Bethlehem in the Biblical accounts of the birth of Jesus) and are taken from the coat of arms of Cologne, Germany, close to the location where the 86th Infantry Division first held positions during World II. The four-sided, equilateral background is a symbol of order and equity dand is an allusion to the organization’s management and control functions.

As of Winter 2024, the 86th Training Division is an Army Reserve unit assigned to the 84th Training Command. It consists of two Brigades headquartered at Milwaukee, Wisconsin and Arlington Heights, Illinois and a Mission Training Complex at Arlington Heights.
