U.S. ARMY 850TH MILITARY POLICE BATTALION UNIT CREST (DUI)

The 850th Military Police Battalion is a subordinate unit of the 158th Maneuver Enhancement Brigade, Arizona Army National Guard comprising the 855th, 856th, and 860th Military Police Companies. It is headquartered at Papago Park Military Reservation in Phoenix, Arizona. The 850th Military Police Battalion Distinctive Unit Insignia was approved for wear on 23 December 2010. Comprising a shield and attached scroll, the design honors the unit’s home state or Arizona while employing imagery to convey the Battalion’s mission and the characteristics of its Soldiers.

Bursting rays of sunlight at the top of the shield are adopted from the Arizona state flag and the Arizona Army National Guard Shoulder Sleeve Insignia. Black is used for the upright sword, crossed pistols, and attached scroll to emphasize the dependability and strength of the Soldiers serving in the Battalion. As is always the case in military heraldry, the upright sword is a symbol of military readiness and leadership. Crossed pistols (Harper's Ferry Model 1805) are a clear illustration of the unit’s law-enforcement mission as they are identical (save for color) to the crossed pistols used on the branch insignia of the Military Police Corps. The green areas on the left and right are flanches and are indicative of the Battalion’s vigilance toward ensuring national security.

VERITAS QEQUITAS, the Battalion motto, translates as “Truth And Justice.”

Distinctive Unit Insignias are worn by all Soldiers (except General Officers) in units that have been authorized to be issued the device. It is worn centered on the shoulder loops of the Army Green Service Uniform (AGSU) and the blue Army Service Uniform (ASU, Enlisted only) with the base of the insignia toward the outside shoulder seam. Current regulations do not permit the DUI to be worn on the Dress variations of either uniform, however.

Enlisted personnel wear the insignia centered on a shoulder loop by placing it an equal distance from the outside shoulder seam to the outside edge of the shoulder-loop button. Officers (except Generals) wearing grade insignia on the shoulder loops center the DUI by placing it an equal distance between the inside edge of the grade insignia and the outside edge of the button.

More guidance on wear of the DUI is found in DA Pamphlet 670-1, Section 21-22, "Distinctive unit insignia" and 21–3(d) and (e), "Beret" and "Garrison Cap," respectively.
